2020 Hyundai Sonata vs 2020 Toyota Camry

Perhaps the most iconic member of the Hyundai lineup is the Sonata. Although currently one of the youngest vehicles on the lineup, as the 2020 Hyundai Sonata is all new this year, it is also the oldest Hyundai model still around, having been introduced back in 1985. While sedans might not be as popular as they used to be, vehicles like the Sonata remain strong members of the sedan lineups out there, as do other icons like the 2020 Toyota Camry.

We wanted to see how our midsize sedan measures up to this titan of the class, which preceded the Sonata by about three years in the early eighties. We decided to pit the two against each other in a side-by-side comparison, which you can check out below.

Advantages of the 2020 Sonata

As you can see, the two sedans are quite comparable to one another, though each model has its advantages. In the first and final rows, we highlighted two areas in which the Sonata and Camry are dead even. The first highlighted fuel economy, as both sedans achieve a combined efficiency rating of 32 miles per gallon across city and highway driving. The other area is seating, which of course both sedans offer room for up to five.

In the middle of the table, however, each sedan gets a leg up on the other. In the second row, the Toyota Camry trumps the Hyundai Sonata in terms of power by generating an extra 12 horsepower. That’s not a mind-blowing difference by any means, but it is enough to give the Camry a slight advantage over the Sonata. While the everyday driver might not be able to notice that difference, it could be much easier to notice the extra 0.9 cubic feet – nearly a full cubic foot – of extra space in the trunk that the Sonata offers, as shown in the third row.
