The Hyundai lineup is filled with recognizable vehicles, but when it comes to its crossover vehicles we’re pretty sure the Santa Fe is at the top of the list. The same could be said for the Toyota Highlander when it comes to its lineup, which is why we thought we’d pit the two of them against one another by comparing the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe vs 2017 Toyota Highlander.
Scrolling down to the table below, it becomes quite obvious that these two vehicles are quite evenly matched, but each has its advantages. However, as you’ll come to see, the Santa Fe’s advantages are much steeper.
2017 Hyundai Santa Fe | Vs | 2017 Toyota Highlander |
25 MPG | Highway Fuel Efficiency | 24 MPG |
290 HP | Horsepower | 185 HP |
13.5 cu. ft. | Cargo Capacity | 13.8 cu. ft. |
5,000 lbs. | Towing Capacity | 1,500 lbs. |
Their similarities become quickly visible in the first row, as they are within one mile per gallon of each other in terms of highway fuel efficiency. That mile is in the Santa Fe’s favor, but one MPG would hardly equate to any savings beyond a handful of pennies over time. The true Santa Fe advantage comes in the second row, where you can see that the base Highlander gives up 105 horsepower to the base Hyundai crossover. That is a massive advantage in acceleration and overall driving experience.
The Highlander’s advantage? 0.3 cubic feet of space in the cargo hold. Much like the Santa Fe’s extra MPG, this doesn’t equate to much of an advantage at all. However, being able to haul an extra 3,5000 pounds in a trailer is a nice advantage. And that advantage belongs to the Hyundai Santa Fe.
