For the upcoming 2021 model year, the long-running and popular Hyundai Elantra will be redesigned as it enters its next generation. That makes the 2020 Hyundai Elantra the last of its kind, and it’s an incredible option in the compact sedan segment, but that’s a pretty steep segment. We thought we’d see how it measures up against one of its biggest class rivals, the 2020 Toyota Corolla.
The iconic Toyota Corolla has been around a bit longer than the Hyundai Elantra, but the latter was first introduced in 1990, which means it now has three decades of experience under its own belt. Even with its impending overhaul, Hyundai still made upgrades to the 2020 Elantra, improving its fuel efficiency and standardizing SmartSense safety features.

When it comes to specifications, these two sedans are quite comparable to one another, but it doesn’t take much more than a glance at the table above to see that one vehicle certainly has a leg up. We kicked things off in the first row by looking at the two sedans’ power ratings. In terms of horsepower, the Elantra generates eight more than the Toyota Corolla. That’s not a game-changing difference, but it is a power advantage nonetheless.
Despite that advantage, the Hyundai Elantra also achieves superior fuel economy, getting a pair of extra miles per gallon combined across highway and city driving. But that’s not where the advantages end, as the compact sedan also offers a bigger trunk. But cars offer seating for up to five, but the Elantra provides an extra 1.3 cubic feet of space for you to fill with groceries, luggage or what have you.
