As the Hyundai brand turns more towards electrification, more alternative-fuel vehicles join the automaker’s lineup. While the iconic Hyundai Sonata has had a hybrid variant in the form of the Sonata Hybrid for many years, the compact Hyundai Elantra has never been electrified. Now, for the 2021 model year, not only did the traditional compact sedan get completely redesigned, but it and its hatchback sibling the Elantra GT have been joined by the nameplate’s first ever electrified variant, the 2021 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, available right here in Cocoa FL.
The new 2021 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is powered by a 1.6L GDI Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine alongside a permanent-magnet electric motor and a lithium-ion-polymer battery. The electric motor is capable of generating 32 kW of power from the battery, which has a capacity of 1.32 kWh and is located beneath the vehicle’s rear seats. Altogether, the Elantra Hybrid is capable of generating a net system output of 139 horsepower alongside 195 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty of power for a small sedan like this to deliver an enjoyable experience behind the wheel.
Mated to the powertrain is a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission that allows for rapid shifts and provides a much more dynamic and engaging experience on the road than many other vehicles in its segment. Drivers will be able to activate an electric-only mode in which torque is delivered instantly while operating at lower speeds. Higher speeds are also possible thanks to available power assist.
Although the Environmental Protection Agency has not yet released official fuel economy ratings as of the creation of this page, Hyundai has announced its own personal estimation of 50 miles per gallon combined across highway and city driving. Other things that set the Elantra Hybrid apart are standard 16” alloy wheels and its fully independent multilink rear suspension system.
